Part 7 · Goals

Some habits work toward something you can count: 300 pages, 50 km, 20 lessons. A goal gives the habit that number and a bar to fill. Each habit has at most one goal. A goal adds up over time and never resets.

The goal is saved as you type, so there’s no Save to press for it. Its row in the list now reads “0 / 6 parts”, with a bar and a percentage.

The sheet takes an amount three ways:

  • Add puts it on top of what’s there.
  • Subtract takes it off, for a correction.
  • Set types in the new total, and the app works out the difference.

Progress stops at zero and at the goal. A Note in the same sheet is kept with that bit of progress.

Logging progress doesn’t log effort by itself. Save and Log Effort does both at once. When a save reaches the goal and you haven’t logged effort today, the app asks whether to.

Progress you logged today shows in orange at the end of the bar, with “+6 parts today” under it, so you can see what today added. Earlier progress keeps the usual color, and a reached goal turns green.

History, in the Goal section, lists every bit of progress, newest first, with the total after each. Click one to change its amount or time. Right-click it to delete it. If it had a note, you choose whether the note goes too or stays as an ordinary note.

To change the target, edit Target in the form. To drop the goal, use the trash button in the Goal header. That deletes its progress, while notes written with it stay.

Progress also shows in the Notebook (Part 4), under that day’s effort.

Goals are free on habits. A reminder can have a goal too (Part 8), unless it repeats.
