Learn Excellence (for macOS)

If you reached this link via the “Learn Excellence” habit on your app, skip the steps in “Creating a Habit”:

Creating a Habit

  1. Create a new habit: open the app and click the ”+” button to create a new habit.
  2. In the name field, call it “Learn Excellence”
  3. In the description field, give it something like “Working on learning how to use the Excellence Is a Habit app.”
  4. In the link field, enter the URL of this page: https://excellenceisahabit.app/learn

You may notice that there is a new section called “Links”. When you give a habit a link, they are grouped by the base url (e.g., excellenceisahabit.app) and shown here. If you do work on multiple habits on the same platform, you can easily see all related habits in one place.

Editing the Habit

  1. Let’s add a category: click the ”+” button next to the category field and title it “Learning”.

If you already have a learning category, don’t worry about making duplicates. It will simply use the existing category.

Your new category will appear under the Categories section.

  1. Turns out you may want to narrow the category: click the ”+” button again. Next to the ”/”, write “Apps”. It should be “Learning/Apps”. Click save.

Categories can be organized hierarchically, allowing you to create subcategories under main categories for better organization.

In the categories section, you can click the ”>” to expand it.

  1. Let’s also give the habit a context. Contexts are basically tags that you can use to group habits by different aspects, such as location, time, or type of activity. Click on the field and type “Desk”. Press enter to save the context.

Your new context will appear at the top (next to the “Create New Habit (+)” button).

You can click it to filter on your context (clicking it twice will filter on habits that don’t have that context). You can also click “Manage Contexts” to edit or delete existing contexts.

  1. Now, let’s decide what status you want your habit to be in:
  • Active: means you plan to work on this habit now
  • Scheduled: means you plan to work on this habit at a specific date and time (e.g., tomorrow at 9 am)
  • Paused: means that you have temporarily stopped working on this habit
  • Archived: means that you have permanently stopped working on this habit and it is stored for reference only

By default, active habits repeat daily. However, you may want see this habit less frequently.

In that case, select “Recurrence” and choose how often you want the habit to repeat (i.e., daily, weekly, monthly, yearly). You can, for instance, set this habit to repeat every 2 weeks on Monday at 9 am.

Note: Repeating habits get scheduled for the next date only after you mark them as complete and one day has passed.

For now, keep this habit as active.

  1. Finally, let’s add a note to the habit. Right-click the habit and click “Add Note” (or click the plus button next to notes).

Notes are a place to keep records of information like:

  • What you’ve accomplished thus far
  • What you’ve learned
  • What you need to tackle in the future

Type: “Today, I started my journey on learning how to use the Excellence app. I may archive this habit or keep it active in case I still want to work some more on figuring the ins and outs of this tool.”

Click “Save”.

This will add a note to the habit.

You may also notice the addition of a Notebook option. The Notebook collects all your notes from different habits and shows it in one clean timeline view.

If you’re done with “Learn Excellence”, you can set its status to Archived. Or, if you want to continue learning, but you’re done for today, click the checkbox next to the habit to mark it as complete.

In either case, you may notice that both the link and category for this habit have moved under “Finished”. If all habits for a category or link are completed or not active, the category or link will also move under “Finished”.

Something Extra: Calendar Integration

In the settings (Menubar > Excellence Is a Habit > Settings or cmd+,), you can find the Calendar Integration options.

You get the following:

  • Add a new “Excellence” calendar to your Apple Calendar app. A “Your Excellent Agenda” event will be generated based on what day your habits are scheduled for (with active contributing to today). Each calendar event has a link back to the Excellence app.
  • Allows you to see today’s calendar events in the Active scope.

To get started, simply toggle on “Calendar Integration” and click Allow on the prompt. You can then toggle “Your Excellent Agenda in Apple Calendar” and/or “Today’s events in Active” to take advantage of these features.
